What’s the Outlander series book about?

Despite being a series that defies genre, Outlander could also be described as historical fantasy. Outlanders began after World War II.

Claire Beauchamp Randall, a combat nurse, is on vacation in the Scottish Highlands with her husband when she is transported through an ancient stone circle back to 1743 Scotland. Jamie Fraser is her guide through this new, or even old, world, and she quickly falls in love with him.

Jamie and Claire continue their adventures in the Caribbean, America, and France. We don’t want it to be spoiled by more time traveling.

How Many Outlander Books Are There?

Eight books have been published so far. There is also a sub series, which focuses on Lord John Grey’s character, and a graphic novel called The Exile.

Below is a listing (and reading order!) of books in my OUTLANDER series. Links to their websites are provided for further information.

Outlander

OUTLANDER, also known in the U.K. as CROSS STITCH”, is my first novel. It’s the best selling book in my Outlander series. It was published for the First Time in the U.S.A. on November 11, 1991.

What is OUTLANDER? Since its first publication, I have never described the book in less than twenty five words. It (and the rest in the series) have been sold with evident success. Literature, Fiction, and Historical Fiction. Historical Nonfiction is also a category.

They are accurate. Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Romance. Military History (no, not honest), Gay and Lesbian Fiction. And…Horror. (Really! My book beat George R.R. Martin and Stephen King to win the Quill Award 2006.

The only way I have described this book to anyone has been to tell them the story. Here it is. After WWII, Claire Beauchamp Randall, a young Englishwoman, travels to the Scottish Highlands in 1946 with Frank. He’s an ex-combat nurse, and she’s been in.

Dragonfly in Amber

DRAGONFLY in Amber is the second book in my OUTLANDER series of major novels. It was published in the U.S.A. on July 1, 1992.

25th Anniversary Edition: For all those who were wondering if/when Random House (my main publisher in the U.S.A.) might do special Anniversary editions, the answer is yes! The 25th Anniversary edition DRAGONFLY in Amber is now available! (See the cover artwork at right. It was released on October 24, 2017, in the U.S.A. and other international markets.

We learn that Jamie Fraser survived the battle at Culloden despite all his efforts. He’s not happy. In the 20th century, Claire was just as shocked at Jamie’s survival but much happier about it. Roger MacKenzie (Claire’s son) and Brianna, Claire’s daughter, draw closer to one another as they search for Jamie Fraser’s past. Will they be able to find him? Drums of Autumn

The Fiery Cross

The FIERY CROSS, the fifth book in my OUTLANDER series of books, follows DRUMS IN AUTUMN. The story is set against the War of the Regulation, North Carolina, which was the first tax payer’s rebellion of the American colonies and a precursor of the full blown Revolution.

It follows the DRUMS OF AUTUMN. Jamie is aided and sometimes hindered by Claire, his wife and conjure woman for Fraser’s Ridge.

His daughter Brianna, his 20th century inventiveness may even kill them all. He also has a difficult relationship with Roger MacKenzie, his son in law. This is due to Roger’s inferiority and comparing his developing skills in farming, swordcraft, and leadership.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes

Many people believe that God is Time. There is the preexisting and never ending. The notion of being all powerful is a reality. Nothing can stop Time. Not mountains. Time is, naturally, all healing. All things are covered if you give enough time.

This is the Prologue of A BREATH IN SNOW AND ASHES. It’s the sixth novel in the bestselling OUTLANDER Series (following THE FIERY CROSS). Jamie, who has been building many things, is forced to declare himself a rebel by history. The American Revolution is a civil conflict in which neighbor turns against neighbor and Fraser’s Ridge.

An Echo in the Bone

An Echo In The Bone is the seventh novel in the OUTLANDER series. It has four main stories. Jamie and Claire Fraser are currently in the midst of the American Revolution.

Their daughter Brianna and Roger MacKenzie are finding their feet at Lallybroch after their return from their past. Lord John Grey and his stepson William (Jamie’s unacknowledged illegitimate child) are involved in the Revolution on the British side.

William is in the army, while Lord John is on the clandestine. This book’s U.S. cover shows a Caltrop, which is not a Celtic Chicken foot, but an ancient military weapon used to stop cavalry from approaching. The caltrop looks like a child’s Jack.

Written in My Own Heart’s Blood

The Eighth Book in Outlander Series… This eighth major novel is called WRITTEN IN MY HEART’S BODY. It tells the story of Jamie, Claire, and a host of other OUTLANDER characters.

The book is called MOBY shorthand. My Own Heart’s blood = MOH = MoOH-B = Moby. Diana Publisher’s description In OUTLANDER, Claire Beauchamp Randall, an ex-combat nurse from England, is introduced. She walks through a circle of stones in the Scottish Highlands and then disappears.

In 1743. From there, the story was told in six more novels. CNN called it a grand adventure written upon a canvas that probes and weighs the soul and measures the human spirit across [centuries].

The story continues with book eight, WRITTEN in my own heart’s blood. The world was turning upside down in June 1778. George Washington is following the British Army as it withdraws from Philadelphia.

The Outlandish Companion – Vol. One

Volume 1 of THE OUTLANDISH COMPANION (aka “O.C.”) is a nonfiction book that provides information, background, and answers to many of the questions readers had about my OUTLANDER series.

It was published for the First Time in the U.S.A. on March 15, 2015. Volume 1 of The O.C. is an updated, revised edition of the single volume OUTLANDISH COMPANION that was first published in 1999. In 2015, there were four more books in the main OUTLANDER series.

There were also several related books. A second volume was created, which took many years. What does The Revised O.C. contain? What makes the revised OUTLANDISH COMPANION unique from the original?

The original COMPANION had two chapters, along with a few smaller items scattered about, that were completely out of date. This was the chapter on Online Communities and Resources. Since 1998, the internet has changed dramatically.

Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone (not yet published)

Gabaldon is currently at work on Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. However, there has yet to be an official publication date. Gabaldon writes on her website about the book’s title, “Where did it come from?”

Talking to your honeybees is an ancient Celtic tradition that was also used in other parts of Europe. It has made it to the Appalachians. It is important to tell your bees about every event, such as birth, death, arrival, or departure because they will fly away if they don’t know.

FAQs

Who wrote the Outlander books?

In 1991, Diana Gabaldon published her first Outlander novel. Outlander was her practice novel. She never intended to reveal it to anyone.

Will there be an Outlander book 10?

After BEES, I will begin Book Ten (no name yet), the final book in the OUTLANDER series that focuses on Jamie and Claire. Book Ten will be a Large Novel. It will take a while (at least several years) to complete.

Do Jamie and Claire die in books?

Although the house on Fraser’s Ridge does eventually burn, Jamie and Claire are not seriously injured by it. However, the house fire pushes the Frasers towards their next adventure: a trip to Scotland.
